First Competitive Season of Fortnite Announced and the Prize Pool Is a Whopping $100 Million

Epic Games Has Revealed Massive Prize Pool for First Competitive Season of Fortnite

Dataminers have found evidence that jetpacks may be coming to Fortnite and while this isn’t confirmed, one thing Epic Games couldn’t wait to shout from the rooftops is that the first season of Fortnite competitive play is on it’s way. And it gets even better when you find out just how much money they’re shelling out for the first season of competitive play: $100,000,000!

Yes, you read that right and no those extra zeros aren’t a typo. Epic Games has announced that it will provide $100 million in prize pool money for the first year of competitive play. These Fortnite competitions are slated to start some time later this year. In a recent blog post Epic Games revealed the big news, “In the 2018 — 2019 season, Epic Games will provide $100,000,000 to fund prize pools for Fortnite competitions. We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different – we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game. Stay tuned for more details about competitive structures and eligible platforms in the weeks ahead.”

You’re not the only one shocked by the amount of money up for grabs because it is unprecedented. Most competitive games lure players with the promise of thousands of dollars of winnings, not millions. In fact, according to Forbes, Dota 2’s championship prize pool was the biggest to date, with $25 million, and the total amount the top ten esports games combined gave away was $91 million. Of course it must be stated that no single player will pocket the total prize pool of $100 million, but it is still a ton of money.

Considering just how much $100 million can buy, there’s no doubt that Fortnite will bring in a ton of players from the various other esports leagues who want a crack at bigger winnings. As of right now Epic didn’t reveal any more details about its competitive play but who knows, we might hear a whole lot more at E3 is just a few weeks time.
