Black Ops 4 Has No Campaign but Will Have “Narrative” & Solo Missions

Here’s How Narrative Will Factor Into Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Developer Treyarch has debuted Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, at long last, and fans have tons of questions. Luckily, yesterday, some of those questions were answered. Right now, one of the points of contention surrounding the studio and the next COD is the lack of a campaign. Naturally, the devs brought some answers at the major reveal event.

Treyarch’s Senior Producer, Yate Miller, and Game Designer Matt Scronce provided new details in a sit-down interview with outlets. According to Miller, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was never going to include a campaign. After Black Ops III, the developer worked on methods to branch out the single-player experience. Miller stated, however, that testing “iteration and iteration” never landed a campaign worth creating. Thus, rather than deliver a weak campaign, Treyarch doubled down on multiplayer.

“As far as a traditional campaign went, we were never doing that, we felt like where we were going with campaign wasn’t doing what we wanted it to,” said Miller, “so the decision was made to scrap that, and then lean into an opportunity that we saw with all the technologies and different things that we had been building to bring Blackout to the table as well.”

Despite the lack of a campaign, Matt Scronce revealed that narrative context would be supplied for the individual characters in multiplayer. Instead of throwing story out the window, completely, there will be solo missions that expand on the backstory of individual characters. This facet of Black Ops 4, coupled with the story-oriented Zombies experience, may bring the narrative players are hoping for. In that sense, the IP is somewhat like Overwatch this time around.

“The hope is that we’re gonna deliver more content on day one than they’ve ever seen, specifically for fans of narrative, we’ve doubled down on narrative,” Sconce told outlets. “Just because we don’t have a traditional campaign doesn’t mean we have no narrative. We’ve got the completely new experiences in zombies, we’re gonna have Blackout, we’re weaving some of our favorite narrative and locales from past games into that.

“Then in multiplayer, we’re really doubling down on letting players get to know those specialists. Even inside of that we’ve got our solo missions, and specialists will have their own solo missions. So you’ll get to learn about some of the background there, about how their ability works, how their equipment works. If you’re a fan of narrative, we’re definitely going to have that in the game.”
