Wave Race on Switch May One Day Be a Possibility

Shinya Takahashi: “You May See That Game Again”

Nintendo’s Wave Race series hasn’t surfaced in almost two decades. The last game, Wave Race: Blue Storm, was released in 2001 for the Gamecube. Since then, fans have been wondering if the big N will ever release a follow-up to its jet-ski racing franchise.

It might not be anything but if the words of Nintendo’s managing executive officer, Shinya Takahashi, are anything to go by, then there might still be hope for the series to make a big splashy return on Switch.

During the BAFTA’s (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts) last week, Takahashi was asked if the racing series will ever appear on Nintendo’s latest console. He replied by saying:

“You may see that game again. We have been trying to make many games and that may be one of them…I personally love Wave Race!”

It still isn’t much to go on, but it is encouraging to hear that Takahashi — who was once a director on the original Wave Race 64 — wants to see the series return one day in some capacity.

Exactly what that could be is anyone’s guess, though. Could a brand new Wave Race game be in development for the Nintendo Switch? Is it possible that Wave Race: Blue Storm is getting the remaster treatment? Could Blue Storm be a potential Virtual Console game launching for Switch? If anything, Takahashi’s comment has only opened up even more questions.
