The Switch Is the Fastest-Selling Video Game System in Canada, Too

Switch Sales in Canada Have Been “Record-Breaking”

By now we’ve all heard the news that the Nintendo Switch has been a huge success, selling a worldwide total of 10 million consoles — 4.8 million in the United States alone. But what about in Canada? It isn’t often we get to report on video game news about our home country but recent findings in the December NPD report sort of forced our hand.

According to the NPD, Nintendo Canada has revealed that the Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling video game system in Canadian history. They called sales “record-breaking” and that no other video game system has sold stronger in its first 10 months than Nintendo’s latest machine. The previous record holder was the Wii during the mid-2000’s which, of course, went on to sell over 100 million units worldwide.

“The response that the Nintendo Switch has received from Canadians has been nothing short of spectacular,” said Nintendo of Canada’s general manager and senior director, Pierre-Paul Trepanier, in a statement to MobileSyrup. “We’re thrilled to have seen such record-breaking momentum in 2017.”

During December, the Switch was the best-selling console in the US, beating out the PS4 and Xbox One over the Holiday season. The company’s previous system, the Wii U, only managed to sell over 13 million consoles across its five-year lifespan. With the Switch already hitting 10 million in less than a year’s time, it’s safe to say that the Switch will surpass the Wii U quite easily, and possibly very soon.

Nintendo Switch multimedia functionality
