Does 4K Resolution Make a Better-Looking Game?
For a long time now, Microsoft has been playing up their Xbox One X as the best place to play. With intense 4K graphics and impressive hardware specifications, it’s hard to argue the fact. But that hasn’t stopped PlayStation’s Global Sales Head, Jim Ryan.
PlayStation just came off a tremendous media showcase at Paris Games Week, a move to intercept Microsoft’s new console. While they don’t have the power of the X, they do have an arsenal of games to gloat about. 4.2 Teraflops on the PS4 Pro still puts Sony’s console in the shadow of the Xbox One X’s 6 teraflops, but according to Jim Ryan, specs aren’t the real selling point.
In an interview with the Telegraph, the same in which he defended PGW’s violent trailers, Ryan downplayed the difference in console hardware specs:
“Specs are interesting but that’s all they are: specifications. The proof is in how the games look – and which games they are. You saw last night, there was a great range of games – many of which are exclusive to our platform and you will only find on a PS4 Pro, that I think allow us to feel – as I said almost three times last night – that we remain the best place to play.”
Ryan then took the time to remind everyone that Sony has a list of talented, first-party studios. Since they build PS4 titles from the ground up, it’s hard to rival their technical and artistic mastery.
“Certainly for us it is one of the key differentiators, yes. Games like Uncharted 4, we just had Gran Turismo, a whole range of stuff from studios located in Japan and Europe – obviously Horizon Zero Dawn from Guerrilla Games here in Europe – West Coast of America – we’ve spent a lot of time nurturing that network of studios, a lot of time over many, many years, and a lot of hard work. but we think now it’s a big asset for us.”
