Blizzard Sues Alleged Overwatch Rip-Off from China

Look at All These Copied Overwatch Characters

Great ideas breed clones, and this clone takes several, maybe hundreds of cues from Blizzard’s Overwatch. Granted, gaming is built off the ideas that come before—it’s how we get innovation. In this case, one Chinese developer didn’t innovate but copied an established FPS.

Here’s a new mobile title straight outta China, an FPS known as Heroes of Warfare, and you might think it looks startlingly familiar. We have screens courtesy of Hachima and My Game News Flash. Among the heroes we have are girl Lucio, teen Reinhardt, a Panda instead of Winston (because it’s China), and more. Looking at it now, it seems to be the very same mobile title we covered some time back.

When we covered this game on COGconnected, it was known as Hero Mission. Or maybe it was another game that copied Overwatch, and all these games are just copying each other. I don’t know because I don’t know Chinese. But back then, we saw a myriad of other characters that heavily mimicked Blizzard’s popular FPS.

Well, it looks like Blizzard has since caught on to this clone. According to a new report from PC Watch, Blizzard China and NetEase are suing the game company responsible. And as reported by Kotaku, they are “demanding that (sic) an apology and restitution.” Thus, expect some interesting proceedings. For now, Blizzard is getting Apple to remove the game from the app store.

Of course, because Overwatch is as popular as it is, a clone was bound to arise sooner or later. But, this is a total carbon copy. That screen above looks like a downgraded version of Ilios. The whole game looks like a downgrade, but it is a mobile title.
