Tokyo Tower Becomes a Final Fantasy Dungeon

Final Fantasy Gets Lit for Its 30th Anniversary

Remember that Final Fantasy XV Uncovered event where Aaron Paul explained to an audience that the crystals in the Final Fantasy series weren’t crystal meth? Yeah, the JRPG series has seen its share of surreal moments for promoting itself. 2017 is a special year for the series as it celebrates its 30th anniversary with Final Fantasy 7 turning 20 as well. Thus, we’re in the eye of the storm for Final Fantasy IRL. Last Friday, Tokyo Tower got lit up to look like a Final Fantasy dungeon, Crystal Tower, in honor of the series’ 30th anniversary. The tower, usually orange-red when lit, took on an extra shade of blue.

The dungeon first appeared in Final Fantasy III as one of the final dungeons where the Warriors of Light take on Xande, the blue-colored, shirtless sorcerer who is the game’s main baddie until his defeat here. More recently, the tower reappeared in Final Fantasy XIV as a level 50 series of raids. It’s also chock full of callbacks to the third game with plenty of classic enemies like Bone Dragon appearing here.

With plenty of 2017 left, who knows what aspect of our mundane lives will get a Final Fantasy makeover later this year.
