Kill Strain Servers Are Getting Killed After Less Than a Year

Kill Strain’s Servers Shutting Down On July 1, 2017

In an update on the official PlayStation website, Sony revealed that they will be pulling the plug on Kill Strain‘s online servers this summer. While the issue of shutting down servers for games so soon is not new as we’ve seen it with the troubled Valhalla Game Studios’ Devil’s Third on the Wii U, the server shut down still stings for a relatively new game.

The full list of older PS3 and PS Vita games that are having their servers shut down on July 1, 2017 are just below:

PS3

  • High Velocity Bowling
  • Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest
  • Sports Champions
  • Sports Champions 2

PS Vita

  • Modnation Racers: Road Trip

PS4

  • Kill Strain

Regarding Kill Strain, it’s a bit notable here in the lineup for being relatively new as it came out less than a year ago at July 12, 2016.  The free-to-play game had a pretty interesting in hook in combining MOBA and twin-stick action shooter gameplay, but it never seemed to find an audience. Furthermore, it didn’t help that the game was pretty “meh” to a lot of critics. Bigger publications like IGN, Kotaku, and Polygon didn’t even review the game too.

For the studio behind Kill Strain, Sony Interactive Entertainment San Diego, they were hit with a massive lay-off last year. At the time, they noted they would soldier on and not give up on Kill Strain‘s development, telling Polygon, “We are continuing to support Kill Strain. Also to note, the external development team at San Diego Studio has not been affected and Drawn to Death remains in production.”

Their recent game, Drawn to Death, seems to have missed the mark too for many critics too. Twisted Metal‘s David Jaffe was one of the big names behind the four-player arena shooter. The game was originally planned as a free-to-play game, but the studio changed its pricing model before launch. The free-to-play online game strategy rarely works out for consoles.

Here’s hoping the devs at Sony San Diego will be able to move on from Kill Strain and find their footing in an upcoming project.
