Nintendo Switch will not Launch with Virtual Console

Two More Games Listed as Launch Titles, However

Bad news for players looking to do any classic gaming on the Nintendo Switch: the system will not launch with the Virtual Console system available.

According to a report from Kotaku, Nintendo made the announcement in their most recent press release. There is no date available for the Virtual Console’s Switch launch, with Nintendo stating that they “will share more information in the future.”

Nintendo Switch with Red and Blue Joy-Cons Available at Launch

The news isn’t all bad, however. The same announcement disclosed that the Switch is getting two more titles on March 3rd. Fast RMX and Shovel Knight will both be available when the Nintendo Switch hits store shelves next week. This brings the list of Switch titles available immediately all the way to 11. Not an enormous amount by any means, but one that falls in line with Nintendo’s strategy of staggering releases throughout all of 2017.

With no Virtual Console coming for the Switch next week, it remains to be seen how Nintendo will approach this newest version of their retro digital archives. Will it be another generation of slow, drip-fed releases hitting the system over an extended period? Will customers be expected to re-purchase digital versions of games they’ve already bought several times? Will we ever get Mother 3?

The Nintendo Switch is hitting store shelves on March 3rd, 2017.
