Ghost in the Shell Live Action Film to Air Super Bowl Commercial, Check It Out!

Ghost in the Shell is perhaps the most iconic and definitely one of the first popularized animes of the west. Since the release of the 1989 manga of the same name, Ghost in the Shell has seen several animated movie and television adaptations. The latest foray into the thought provoking world originally created by Masamune Shirow is going to be a live-action film starring Scarlett Johansson.

The live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is being directed by Rupert Sanders, of Snow White and the Huntsman fame. Recently, a made-for-TV teaser has been released for the project that will air during the Super Bowl! Even though the teaser hasn’t been aired on TV you can check it out online:

The fact that this film is going to be airing a hype trailer during one of the biggest sporting events in the world is a testament to how much the west has embraced aspects of Japanese culture. Johansson recently spoke about her approach to such an iconic character as the Major in an interview with Collider.  “Bringing these pages to life is a kind of challenge. Because you can’t rip it off the page, it’s totally different. You’re playing it as a–it’s not really a person, but it’s a human brain, it’s someone who’s having this life experience. Which is very different from just ripping stuff off from the manga.”

No doubt, it will be a challenge for Johansson to live up to fan expectations while playing the ever compelling yet stoic Major. She said, “I think when you have a character that’s so beloved, people have a lot of opinions,” and she is definitely on the money with that sentiment. A full-length trailer for Ghost in the Shell has been out for some time now, check it out below.

If you are familiar with the original anime or the more recent remake you will instantly recognize most of the scenes featured in the trailer. It looks like the live action film will try to remain pretty faithful to the original animated feature, which is good news as that anime is epic! We really hope that everyone working on this project nails the ethereal awesomeness that is the world of Ghost In the Shell. What do you think?
