Breath of the Wild Season Pass: Hard Mode will be DLC

First Part of the Season Pass Available at Launch

Nintendo is finally adopting the DLC model with a season pass for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The first bit of DLC for the pass will be released with the game at its launch in March.

The complete “Expansion Pass” is currently priced at $19.99 USD. There’s no word yet on what the individual prices for the two releases will be. 20 American dollars isn’t terrible for a full pass, but it’s still a little unusual to be announced before the launch of the game. More unsettling is the inclusion of Hard Mode in one of the releases. This is a feature that previous Zelda titles unlocked simply by beating the game on normal difficulty.

Breath of the Wild Season Pass DLC

All the details regarding the DLC have yet to come out, although according to Destructoid the in-game clothing is a t-shirt with the Switch logo on it. This seems a strange choice. Perhaps more product placement is in the future? Maybe someday soon Link will find a set of Beats by Dre headphones in a well-hidden treasure chest.

Regardless of the content, DLC of any sort is an unprecedented move for a mainline Legend of Zelda title. This installment is already exploring a lot of firsts for the series. It appears some of them will be more controversial than others. At least the holiday release will have a full new dungeon as well as more story content. Hopefully Nintendo does its due diligence and fleshes out this content as much as possible. If this practice of DLC is going to be a regular occurrence, they need to make sure their audience feels liek they’re getting something worth their money.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be out on March 3rd, 2017 for the Nintendo Switch and the Wii U.
