Super Mario Run Triples Pokémon Go First Day Downloads

Crazy Super Mario Run Day One Downloads

Yesterday Super Mario Run made it’s greatly anticipated debut and was downloaded nearly 3 million times, tripling the day one downloads of Pokémon Go! According to Apptopia, a mobile analytics company, this difference in popularity is largely due to Nintendo’s marketing strategy. Whatever the reason, this is an awesome figure for Nintendo’s mobile game debut!

According to Apptopia, Super Mario Run was downloaded 2.85 million times on day one, compared to the 900,000 downloads for Pokémon Go. We’ll have to wait and see what the downloads will be after the first few days, as Pokémon Go reached 5.6 million downloads by day three. Of course, if day one is any indication, Super Mario Run will blow Pokémon Go out of the water completely.

As Apptopia has stated, the comparison between the games isn’t exactly fair, as Super Mario Run is available in 150 countries, while Pokémon Go was only available in three at the time of release. Super Mario Run has also been marketed all over the world, from being unveiled at a high-profile Apple event earlier this year, to making an appearance alongside the Nintendo Switch on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Although Pokémon Go did not have nearly the same amount of marketing, it was available for both ios and android devices. Super Mario Run is only available for ios devices currently, and an android version will be released next year. The game is free to download, however in order to play more than the first few levels, players will need to make a one-time $10 purchase. For everyone with an android, there is another game, Super Mario Maker for the 3DS, available to tide you over until next year.

It has been projected that Super Mario Run will hit 30 million downloads in it’s first month, making Nintendo millions of dollars in revenue. We’ll just have to wait and see just how successful the game is in the long term!
