Robinson: the Journey Brings Jurassic Action to Oculus Rift in January

Enter a VR World Full of Dinosaurs and Adventure in Robinson: the Journey Now Coming to Oculus Rift

Today, December 22, 2016, Developer Crytek announced the release of their immersive, virtual reality explorer, Robinson: The Journey for Oculus Rift. Perhaps invoking the titular character from Robinson Caruso, this game puts you in the shoes (and behind the eyes) of a child named Robinson who falls from the sky in some sort of escape pod, onto the planet known as Tyson III.  A primordial planet full of lush greenery and populated by dinosaurs, this planet makes a perfect showcase for the capabilities of VR.

This game has already launched on PSVR, and you can check out our review here. Crytek is a company that has worked on such beautiful titles as: Far Cry, Crysis and Ryse: Son of Rome. They have proven time and again to be an incredibly graphically capable developer/publisher and it is no wonder that they are pushing their games across all VR platforms. Though this game tends to fall a little short on engaging gameplay, Robinson: The Journey really capitalizes on it’s Jurassic Park style setting.  You might get a little bored or lost on the mostly puzzle and exploration based gameplay, but when you’re trying to outrun a hungry pack of razor-clawed dinosaurs or craning your neck to look up at a towering brontosaurus, any tedium or frustration will melt into pure awe.

Robinson The Journey

It will be interesting to see how the game sells on the Oculus Rift vs. the PSVR.  Though there are spec differences, both platforms deliver the same mode of gaming experience.  Crytek really seems to be pushing the presentation of their games as far as modern VR will allow.  But with a relatively short story, and a couple minor flaws, Robinson: The Journey won’t be your sole reason for shelling out all the dough for an Oculus Rift and compatible hardware.  Though some gamers will invariably experience a sore stomach and motion sickness while gaming with VR, it is encouraging to see more and more games being published for the platform.  Who knows, maybe someday we gamers will be among the fittest members of society, running, jumping and crawling our way through virtual worlds, and sprinting our butts off to escape becoming a snack for a T-Rex!
