Nintendo Switch Sacrifices Performance for Battery

More Revelations for Nintendo Switch Specs Just Keep Coming

Arms and uproar following the reveal of Nintendo Switch specs. The guys over at Gamesbeat recently made the reveal and it seems all but set in stone, the Nintendo Switch specs just aren’t up to par with anything out right now. That being said, we might start to suspect that the Gamecube was Nintendo’s last competetive console in terms of power. Now we can get upset, conjecture, or immediately jump to Nintendo’s defense. Well, let’s focus on what we know.

Nintendo Switch Specs

When the Switch is docked to an HDTV it runs at 1080p resolution, what some might argue should be the minimum for this generation. In it’s in mobile form, it dumbs down to a modest 720p. As for why that is, well, as far as we know the Nintendo Switch is running on Nvidia’s last generation processor, Maxwell instead of Pascal. What this essentially means is that the console will not be a powerhouse, by any means. We suspected this in a relatively recent post where we mentioned that Switch would not even match Sony’s day one PS4.

But that’s not all. Our sources found ample evidence showing that Nintendo Switch specs have been further downgraded. To be specific, the console’s hardware could clock at 768MHz(already low) and now clocks at 307.2MHz. “Nintendo has down-clocked the GPU to hit its thermal and battery life targets” writes Richard Leadbetter at Eurogamer. Watch him go in-depth with Nintendo’s revealed hardware in his video with Tom Morgan below.

And a good point has been made in the video, Nintendo focuses on “experiences.” Building off that understanding, many fans of the company are fans for their experiences. Because of that, Nintendo supporters are probably not worried in the least. Many of us probably never expected Nintendo Switch’s performance to exceed Sony or Microsoft. After all, it is the first mobile platform of its kind. The point made in the video is that switching performance from docked to undocked requires changing game logic. Hence, the only difference gamers are supposed to see between playing Nintendo Switch mobile vs docked is resolution. Otherwise, all games are meant to operate the same.

We can expect more news regarding Nintendo Switch before its release in 2017. But how does this information affect you? Drop down and let us know in the comments. Happy holidays.
