Survey Puts N64 Atop Most Popular Retro Consoles List

N64 Takes Top Spot for GameStop Customers Purchasing Retro Games and Systems

A GameStop survey recently crowned the N64 as the most popular retro system among its customers.

The survey asked GameStop’s PowerUp Rewards members to rank the most popular retro games and systems sold by the retailer. The survey results listed the top 10 consoles and systems from among the rewards club members.

Five of the top ten slots on the list went to Nintendo systems. The rest were a mix of Sony, Sega and Microsoft hardware. Nintendo’s domination of the list is a testament to the enduring popularity of Nintendo’s systems. This is hardly news to anyone who has spent the season fruitlessly searching for a NES Classic. The complete list follows below:

1. Nintendo 64
2. Nintendo Entertainment System
3. Super Nintendo Entertainment System
4. PlayStation
5. Sega Genesis
6. Xbox
7. Sega Dreamcast
8. Sega Saturn
9. Game Boy
10. Game Boy Advance

If the contents of the list are any indication, Nintendo would do well to expand their ‘Classic’ lineup beyond the NES. Clearly the market for Nintendo hits of yesteryear remains pretty brisk. Microsoft and Sony only have one entry each, which says a lot about their current retro strategy. Customers interested in those retro titles have a much easier time finding them in digital form. Nintendo and Sega, now using the same hardware, don’t have the same digital ease of access.

GameStop began trading in retro hardware in October 2015. The store has a wide selection of classic hardware, assuming you’re shopping in the states. International customers can still acquire classic hardware, but expect to pay a bit of a premium by comparison.
