HoloGrid: Monster Battle Brings HoloChess to Life in January

HoloGrid: Monster Battle is bringing Holographic chess to life, coming to Android, iOS in January.

HappyGiant and Tippet Studios are ready to unleash their AR CCG on the world. HoloGrid: Monster Battle is slated for release on iOS and Android as a premium boxed product this January. Starting today, anyone who orders the game will be invited to join the closed beta, and will be among the first to receive the game when it begins shipping next week.

Partly inspired by Phil Tippet’s HoloChess scene in Star Wars: Episode IV, HoloGrid brings Tippet’s monsters to life. HappyGiant uses Photogrammetry to turn 3D models into digital monsters. Players then use these monsters in glorious card-based combat.

HoloGrid’s gameplay is similar to HearthStone or Magic: The Gathering. Players use physical cards to control AR creatures on a gameboard. Players will be able to play head-to-head, either locally or remotely. Offline play is possible as well. You could play online, but the head-to-head seems like Battleship with holograms, which is just awesome.

Although this isn’t the HoloChess most people are familiar with, the depth of the combat will help make up for this fact. CCG players will find fertile ground with this title. Card packs may be sold later, but for now this is a complete purchase. The physical product and the set price point will separate HoloGrid from other mobile titles. There isn’t a release date for any other AR/VR systems yet, but hopefully this changes soon. HoloGrid seems like a title primed and ready for a VR release, at the very least.
