Artist and Developer Team up for Indie Dragon Apocalypse: EarthNight

EarthNight, a New Hand-Drawn Indie Title Is in the Works for PlayStation 4

“Hand-designed procedural generation”; That’s how developer Cleaversoft describes the design of their latest indie platformer, EarthNight. But it’s much more than a platformer, in many ways it’s a playable piece of art. What we have with EarthNight is a passion project four years in the making. Rich Spiegel, author of EarthNight, teamed up with artist Paul Davey in order to bring this dragon-running epic to life.

Paul Davey hand draws all the in-game pieces. Through his hard work, gamers engage in a visually stunning quest across snake-like dragons. Each dragon is a level, and every level operates along a resplendent background that is dynamically generated. Dragons remain the running theme, with two different characters seemlesly speeding their way across an endlessly moving portrait.

Even the trailer is enough to make you feel whimsical. Here’s a soft glimpse of what EarthNight has to offer:

In case you can’t get enough of that music, it was composed by Paul Weinstein, a.k.a. Chipocrite. And EarthNight’s prolific artist, Paul Davey, goes by moniker Mattahan. Both were specially chosen by Spiegel in order to deliver the most lustrous game he could hope to bring to console. And the level of detail and aesthetic type is something unique to Paul Davey’s art style.

Thus, we have elaborate settings with plenty of color and plenty of monsters. Hordes of distinct creatures make up the obstacles in the player’s literally long-winding adventure. You take on the role of either Sydney or Stanley, Sydney based off Davey’s own younger sister, and Stanley who is a “tweaked” character from Cleavesoft’s own Beard Wars app.

Adding to the gameplay are supposed secrets suffusing into every level design. So Spiegel is releasing the game with built-in Twitch streaming for PlayStation 4. His goal, achieve a loyal and dedicated fanbase that can eventually uncover all of EarthNight’s hidden treasures.

With his attention dedicated to EarthNight’s development, Spiegel expects a late 2017 release for PlayStation 4. PC and Mac versions are expected soon after.

How do you feel about Spiegel’s direction? Does EarthNight seem like the next big indie success? Feel free to leave a comment down below.
